Is the liquor bottle fake? Soon, an app will help you find out

New Delhi:

Verifying the authenticity of your favourite liquor brand at a store or a bar will now just be a tap away. Soon, you will be able to check whether a liquor bottle is genuine or not just by using your smartphone. You will also be able to check the price and the availability of the brand of your choice at liquor vends.

The excise department is working on a new mobile app, which will have a host of features to help alcohol lovers get a lot of information. Though the excise department currently has a mobile app ‘mLiquorsSaleCheck,’ which gives consumers the option to check the genuineness of the liquor bottles, many people complain that it is neither popular nor effective.

The new app will have an updated scanner to help the consumers capture the 2D bar code on a bottle or the box and get all the information about the liquor bottle, including its brand, size and the date of manufacturing or bottling among others from a central server. The application will tell the customer whether the liquor bought is coming through an exciseapproved system or not.

An official said that this will also ensure that the vendor or the bar is not passing on spurious or smuggled liquor to the consumer. The consumer will also be assured that he is getting the same brand of liquor served to him which he had asked for.

“Though one can use the existing app to check the authenticity of liquor by either scanning the 2D bar code pasted on the bottle or the box, there have been several complaints that the in-built scanner does not work often. The new app will redress the problem,” said an official.

The app will also have an updated list of liquor vends run by the government-owned corporations and private players to help consumers locate one in the neighbourhood. Various bars, clubs and hotels that serve liquor can also be found via the new app.

“One can even verify the price of his choice of brand on the app before buying to ensure that the vendor is not overcharging,” another official said.

The app will also have the option to lodge a complaint against a vend, a club or a bar in case of overcharging or deficiency of services. Officials say that the beta version of the app is currently in the testing stage, and it may go live in a month’s time.
