■ Nearly 500-acre land was submerged after a 200-foot breach in the Ghaggar at Mallewala village in Sirsa on Friday.
The farmers blamed local administration and government for not arranging sandbags on time.

Gurdeep Singh, a farmer of village Mallewala village, said, “It was around 4am when villagers were holding night vigil that they witnessed a breach near Mallewala village. Soon the matter was informed to local administration and the farmers started strengthening the embankments to pluck the breach.”

Another farmer, Nahar Dev said, “There is a total failure of local administration. We had informed the administration at about 4am, but we started getting help at about 6am. Around 10am, we got sandbags and earthmovers to pluck the breach.”

Sarpanch of village Nejadela Kalan Prahlad Singh said soon after he came to know about the breach, he informed the local administration and help reached after few hours.

Senior Congress leader and former MLA Ranjeet Singh, son of former deputy Prime minister, Devi Lal also reached the village and had a word with the farmers.

Ranjeet Singh said, “There is always a budget for the strengthening embankments. Not even a single official from the administration reached to check the ground situation. The administration must come forward to help the farmers.”

However, SHO of Baragurah police station Krishan Lal reached the spot and assured the villagers of proper help and asked the farmers for night vigil.

He said, “The villagers are holding night vigil. The situation is right now under control and minute to minute detail is being provided to the administration. There are five villages under the police stations which are close to the river. The administration is ready to help the farmers with saving their agriculture land.”

Meanwhile, the affected farmers also demanded special assessment of their agriculture land
