Former Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal and his wife Anita were on Saturday stopped from leaving India by the immigration authorities at the Mumbai airport and were deplaned minutes before their Emirates EK-507 flight to London via Dubai was to take off at 3.35 pm. Their baggage booked in the name of Anita Goyal was also offloaded from the aircraft, leading to about 45 minutes of delay in the flight’s departure.

“Yes the aircraft was on the taxiway when they were deplaned by the immigration authorities. They were denied permission from leaving India. They were not detained as there is no offence against them,” said a senior official who closely monitored the development.

Confirming the development, the Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Barve just said, “Yes, Mumbai police stopped them from leaving India”, and refused to comment further on the situation.

It is not clear if this action was taken on specific request by any agency. Currently, the Enforcement Directorate and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs are probing the books of Jet Airways to examine if there was any diversion of funds.

Last month, Kiran Pawaskar, president of Jet Airways’ Officers and Staff Association, had written to the Mumbai police commissioner demanding that the passports of Goyals and senior management of the airline be impounded and they should not be allowed to leave the country. Over 22,000 employees of Jet had stopped receiving salaries from January 2019, even as the airline ran into deep financial trouble and eventually stopped operations on April 18.

Naresh Goyal, who founded the airline 26 years ago, and his wife Anita had resigned from the board of Jet Airways on March 25 as part of a debt restructuring plan. He had also resigned as chairman of the airline. The lenders consortium led by the State Bank of India had invited bids for the sale of the airline and the bid process is still continuing. Etihad Airways was among four bidders. The Hinduja Group has said it is examining the possibility of investing but had reportedly placed tough conditions during a meeting scheduled with lenders and Etihad in Abu Dhabi on May 23.

Though Naresh Goyal could not be contacted for a comment, an Emirates spokesperson said in a statement, “Emirates is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and we abide by the laws of the various countries we operate in.
