Dharmender Silani, a mandal-level BJP leader in Silani village, Bahadurgarh, of Haryana’s Jhajjar district, shot at his cousin, identified as Raja Singh, with an unlicensed weapon in a dispute over the fact that he had voted for the Congress in the Lok Sabha elections.

Silani shot at Singh thrice — twice on his legs and on his stomach. Singh was rushed to PGIMS, Rohtak, where he is in a stable condition.

as evidence and statements of the witnesses on the spot.

Silani is a former member of the Bahadurgarh’s civic body and an office-bearer of BJP’s mandal unit.

His elder brother, Harender Singh is a local Congress functionary and also is a former councillor. Raja Singh is their first cousin who lives near their residence in the village.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that Silani had asked Raja and his family to vote for the BJP on Sunday. He had been urging everyone to vote in favour of the BJP even as his elder brother was canvassing for the Congress candidate.

“Raja chose to opt for the party and the candidate suggested by Harender and voted accordingly. Silani and Raja had an altercation on Sunday night as well. Following intervention of the elders in the family, the matter was sorted at the time,” said the police.

On Monday morning, Silani, who was carrying a .315 bore weapon, went to Raja’s house and found him and his mother sitting in the front courtyard. The two cousins had another argument over voting and Silani suddenly fired at Raja, a policeman, associated with the investigation, said.

One of the bullets pierced through Raja’s stomach and hit the wall behind him. Raja’s mother was hit by the pellets. Before anybody could react, Silani escaped and left Raja and his mother injured on the spot.
