Apply for leave in advance: PU VC

Panjab University (PU) vice-chancellor professor Raj Kumar has told chairpersons that no leave application, other than casual leave, will be entertained for post-facto approval in future. The VC said this in a meeting held recently with chairpersons. Pointing out that the teaching and non-teaching generally submit their leave applications for approval after taking them, the VC said this makes it difficult to make arrangements for substitutes.

The matter came up for discussion at a meeting held to plan the leaves in advance and to make arrangements for substitutes so that teaching work may not suffer during their absence. Sources said teachers had raised the issue in a meeting of Panjab University Teachers Association (Puta) after which it had passed a resolution that post-facto approval in case of casual leave cannot be denied

‘Placement officer in each dept’
The Panjab University VC has directed teaching departments to designate a training and placement officer in each department and have 10 student volunteers to assist the placement officer. The idea, the VC said, is to enhance the job opportunities for the students.

Leave charge issue worries PU VC

Puta president professor Rajesh Gill, however, said she does not know about the background of the issue since she was not the part of the chairpersons’ meeting and cannot comment without ascertaining the background.

Moreover, the meeting started with the discussion on leaves. The VC raised the concern that chairpersons do not give charge to the immediate senior most faculty member before going on leave. He then advised the chairpersons to give the charge of the department to the seniormost faculty before going on leave.

“We have received complaints from a few departments where the charge is not given to the senior-most faculty member of the department. The charge should be given to the senior-most faculty member in case the chairperson is on leave. Puta endorses this decision and has always been against this pickand-choose policy,” Gill said
