With the State Election Commission setting the ball rolling for elections to five municipal corporations (MCs), the BJP, the INLD and the Congress stated that they would contest the polls on their party symbol while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is yet to take a call.
The elections are important because the prestige of several political leaders will be at stake in these polls.

While Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar represents Karnal in the Assembly, former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s reputation will be at stake in Rohtak, Congress leaders Kuldeep Bishnoi, Savitri Jindal and Sampat Singh as well as Hisar MP Dushyant Chautala have stakes in the Hisar MC.

Subhash Barala, state BJP president, said that the BJP had always been contesting the MC polls on party symbol and this time, too, they would field candidates. “The BJP government has performed excellently in the past four years and we are sure that people in all five MCs would elect a majority of the BJP-backed Mayors and councillors,” Barala claimed.

Ashok Arora, state INLD president, said that Leader of Opposition Abhay Chautala had already announced that the party would contest the MC polls on party symbol.

“We will soon hold a meeting with our alliance partner the BSP and announce a joint strategy for the MC polls. People are fed up with the BJP government and they will use the MC polls to teach the ruling party a lesson,” Arora said.

Announcing that his party would also contest the MC polls on party symbol, Ashok Tanwar, state Congress president, said that the Congress would send observers to all five MCs to find out the best possible candidates.

State AAP convener Naveen Jaihind said that his party would take a call on this in the next two or three days, while Digvijay Chautala, younger son of Ajay Chautala, who has announced the launch of a new political party on December 9, said that their first aim was to float the party
