Indian-Americans divided on India’

While broadly supportive of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian-Americans are divided on the current trajectory of Indian democracy, according to a newly published analysis of an online survey conducted in September 2020. Covering 1,200 Indian-Americans, the survey conducted by YouGov for Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania in the run up to the US elections in November 2020, showed that 36% of the respondents felt India was on the right path, while 39% said it isn’t. The analysis also reaffirms BJP’s continuing popularity among Indian- Americans. Modi, too, remains popular — with 35% strongly approving his job performance and 13% approving of it. “This support is greatest among Republicans, Hindus, people in the engineering profession and those not born in the US,” it said.
