Panchkula:

An agent working with the Sector 8 post office in Panchkula committed a fraud by embezzling Rs 47.78 lakh in depositing money in the recurring deposit (RD) accounts of 155 persons.


A complaint was given to the cops by assistant superintendent of the post offices, Ambala Division. He alleged that since July 4, 2017, Mamta Gupta, a resident of Sector 8, Panchkula, was working as an agent and used to deposit RD money with the post office.

The officials stated that during the posting of Sandeep Kumar at RD accounts at the post office, it was detected that Mamta Gupta had made fake entries of deposits in 155 RD passbooks on various dates with authentication of Sector 8-based post office stamp.

During the investigation, large number of cases of embezzlement of government money amounting to Rs 47.78 lakh was committed by Mamta Gupta, which also came as a shock to the officials of the post office.

Information was given to the Ambala division of post offices and the officials concerned immediately contacted the cops and provided a list of all the 155 RD account holders to the police, with a written complaint against Mamta. The police have registered a case under Sections 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code at Sector 5 police station.

Sub-inspector (SI) Rakesh Kumar, investigation officer, said, “We have registered a case and are investigating the matter. The accused will be arrested soon.
