With thousands of Jains contracting Covid-19 across the country, the community’s religious leaders have announced a special medical insurance scheme. By paying an annual premium of Rs 2,200, Jain community members can get a medical cover of Rs 3 lakh. A cashless form of insurance, it will include the entire medical treatment, quarantine expenses for 14 days, caregiving after being discharged from the hospital and even home quarantine expenses. In the past two days, 50,000 people have already enrolled for the policy.

The scheme was launched on Monday by Jain monk Naypadmasagarji Maharaj in an online meeting attended by 300 directors attached to the Jain International Organisation. According to community officials, six lakh Jains in Mumbai alone will benefit from this scheme. At the meeting, Naypadmasagarji requested nearly 6,000 Jain doctors attached to various hospitals across city to provide counselling to community members and get them access to hospital beds.

Speaking exclusively to Mumbai Mirror, Naypadmasagarji said, “The novel coronavirus is not going away anytime soon. The scheme was launched to help and support the community. Not a single person should be deprived of treatment because of financial constraints.” He said the insurance will be valid until next year, “when hopefully a vaccine would come to the humanity’s rescue”. He said in the meantime the community’s regular health scheme, Shravak Aarogyam Insurance, will also continue.

Urging other religious communities to come out with similar medical policies, Naypadmasagarji said, “Under our scheme, members will also get Rs 1,000 per day as home allowance for medicines and food.

Dr Prince Surana, CEO of the Surana group of hospitals and also a member of the Jain Doctors’ Federation, said his fraternity has simultaneously launched a helpline number for Covid care. He said community members can get online consultation and free medicines through this helpline. “To facilitate better frontline response, a team of 15 Jain doctors will work in rotation to offer treatment and counselling,” Surana said.

All-India president of the Jain International Organisation, Ghaverchand Bohra said many families in the community have lost loved ones to the pandemic. “Though we don’t have the data, we are told that there have been more deaths in Mumbai in comparison to other cities,” Bohra said, adding he knows of one family where eight people tested positive and three died. He said 70 per cent of the Jain community is either middle class or lower middle class and cannot afford medical treatment easily if several members of a family contract the virus. “We don’t want any of our community members to die because they couldn’t afford the medical treatment,” said Bohra about the policy.
