AAP promises
‘ cheap’ future

By Shibaji Roychoudhury in New Delhi

It’s abattle of unrealistic manifestos

THE future of Delhi seemed brighter than the lights of Manhattan as the Aam Aadmi Party ( AAP) and Congress unveiled their election manifestos in the city on Wednesday.

With the Delhi Assembly election only days away, both manifestos were aptly rich in unrealistic promises Other than the tall claim of enacting the Jan Lokpal Bill within 15 days of getting into power, AAP’s manifesto ‘ Sankalp Patra’ also promises the introduction of ' Swaraj' ( self rule) to decentralise power in the national capital. A Swaraj bill is not for the Delhi Assembly to make law; only Parliament has the power to deal with this issue. The Congress took an AAP leaf too, announcing the introduction of ‘ Unified Command Governance’. “ This Delhi Jan Lokpal Bill would cover all the officials and employees of Delhi Government, from the Chief Minister to MLAs. Under this law, it would be mandatory for everyone to declare their asset. The Lokpal would have full autonomy.

Administrative, financial and functional independence and powers to take action public servants,” said Yogendra Yadav, head of AAP’s manifesto committee, while releasing it.

A charged- up AAP has also announced a 50 per cent cut in power tariff and free water supply up to 700 litres per family every day. Following the trend, the Congress has also promised to extend the subsidy to domestic consumers from current 30 kilolitres per month to 40 kilolitres per month, along with three new water treatment plants to be set up.

Both parties have also showed keen interest in wooing Muslims. AAP declares it will not allow false cases to be registered against Muslims, and those already accused will be tried in fast track courts.

AAP will also bring transparency in the functioning of Delhi Waqf Board. The Congress, on the other hand, says it will work on the modernisation of madarsas and construct a Haj House in Dwarka.

To woo the Sikh community, the AAP has promised justice to 1984 anti- Sikh riot victims. In addition to several sops, the party assures to end fake encounters and false cases against Muslim youths.

While AAP came up with a manifesto which is as extensive as it is unrealistic, Congress has concentrated more on glorifying their achievements as opposed to make more promises.

In their so called realistic promises, the party is aspiring to achieve double- decker flyovers and roads, monorails and trams in the Capital.

Furthermore, it claims to make Delhi the knowledge capital of the country. There will also be hawking zones all around the city.
