AMRITSAR : Import of apple from Afghanistan is keeping the business going at the Integrated Check Post (ICP), Attari, that remained closed from March to mid-July last year due to the coronavirus pandemic outbreak.

The ICP, which facilitates India’s trade with Pakistan and Afghanistan, witnessed a sharp increase in import of apple in the last two weeks. Indian traders say the apple is being imported due to low yield of crop in Kashmir this year.

There has been no business via the ICP with Pakistan that had imposed a complete ban on trade with India in August 2019 in reaction to the abrogation of Article 370 but has allowedonly import from Afghanistan via the land border.

Prior to that, India had imposed 200% duty on all items imported from Pakistan in reaction to the February 2019 Pulwama attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed.

“For the last 12 days, 20 to 25 truckloads of apple from Afghanistan are arriving here on a daily basis. Before this, only one to two trucks were coming. From July to December end, onion was the major item that was imported from Afghanistan. An average 50 truckloads of onion arrive daily,” said ICP in-charge Sukhdev Singh.

Nearly 10 truckloads of various items other than apple such as cumin seed, dry fruit and licorice (mulethi) are coming from Afghanistan on a daily basis, it is learnt.

Sukhdev Singh said when the trade between India and Pakistan was normal 100-150 trucks would bring imported items from the two countries every day. Also, as many trucks would carry exported items through the land border daily.

Jatinder Khurana, an Amritsar-based trader, said, “The taste of Kashmiri and Afghani apple is same. The apple imported from China and the US has a different taste. The Kashmir and Afghan apple fetched nearly the same price in the market.”

Lakhwinder Singh, a porter at the ICP, said, “Earlier, onion import helped us. Now, the import of apple is giving us work. We had a hard time when the coronavirus-induced lockdown was introduced. We are afraid what will happen when the apple import will stop.
