Patiala : Kisan union flags, banners and posters opposing the new farm laws have added a new hue to the ongoing three-day Shaheedi Jor Mela in Fatehgarh Sahib, which is held to commemorate the martyrdom of two younger sons of 10th Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh.

Along with widespread religious fervour, farmers on way to and from protest sites at Delhi border are turning up in large numbers to pay obeisance at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib and Gurdwara Jyoti Sarup Sahib.

People from across the state are reaching in tractor trolleys, commercial vehicles and even two-wheelers, many of them carrying farmer union flags and banners, explaining what was wrong with the new farm laws and why they were protesting.

“It is completely different atmosphere this time as farmers who are protesting have taken the centre stage. Even, the langar stalls have banners and posters, appealing the Centre to repeal the three farm laws,” said Gurbachan Singh, a Sirhind resident.

Gulzar Singh of Gurdaspur said their jatha was going to Singhu border and halted at Fatehgarh Sahib to pay obeisance and to gather strength for farmers’ battle against the central government, which was is “hellbent on implementing the farm laws”. “These three days hold great importance in Sikh history and the farmers protest has coincided at the same time. It may be mentioned that two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh Zorawar Singh (9) and Fateh Singh (7) were bricked alive here on December 26, 1705, on the orders of then Sirhind governor Wazir Khan during the regime of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
