OPDs in PGI likely to resume in August

Major changes in infrastructure to ensure social distancing are taking place to resume OPDs in PGI in August.

New OPD block and multilevel parking are being modified and upgraded. The ground floor of the parking will be restructured as a holding area for those who have to wait for their turn. “The work entails providing and fixing aluminium partition, providing toilets, utility shops, biomedical and air-conditioning works. The estimated expenditure is Rest 89 lakh. Certain changes are also proposed at the main lobby of the new OPD building,” said a senior official in PGI.

There will be separate entry and exit points for patients and doctors in all the departments. “Before patients enter the hospital from the holding area to be made in the parking, they will be thermally scanned and asked to fill up a declaration form,” the official said.

The waiting/holding area will accommodate 500 people. However, not more than 50 patients will be allowed to enter the new OPD at a time after screening. “The patients can visit using online appointment system only. This will be on the same lines of the existing teleconsultation,” said a PGI faculty member.

The AIIMS has started operating its OPD services since June 25 and allows only 15 patients at a time per OPD. “As a surge is expected in the coming months, we have to take extra precautions before resuming OPDs. Besides Covid-19 cases, we are still seeing patients from various departments for chemotherapy and gynaecology and those on dialysis on a regular basis,” said a senior faculty member.

The emergency area of PGI has partitions to ensure patients keep a distance from each other. “The OPD block is away from the Covid hospital and the same doctors will not be on OPD duty when they are attending patients afflicted by the virus. This will be on as per the roster which will be prepared from time to time. All those entering the hospital and not wearing masks will be provided one,” said a senior official.

Other government hospitals, including Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, and Government Multi-specialty Hospital, Sector 16, are silent about their resumption of OPDs
