Washington : President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign reportedly removed stickers meant to enforce social distancing at the president’s June 20 rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in remarkable disregard of the resurgence of Covid-19 infections that hit the United States.

The Washington Post reported Saturday, with video evidence, of two campaign staffers who went around the stands removing thousands of stickers from alternate seats that said “Do not Sit Here, Please”.

The stickers mandated by the management of the venue were intended to keep attendees socially distant in accordance with the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An increasing number of Trump campaign staff members have since tested positive for Covid-19, as did at least one news correspondent who covered it.

Meanwhile, the US crossed 2.5 million infections, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally. Five states reported record single-day infections on Saturday.

Florida led the five with 9,585 new cases. Arizona was next with 3,591, followed by Georgia with 1,990, South Carolina with 1,604 and Nevada with 1,099.

Texas, which has revived some of the social distancing norms because of the surge, reported 5,700 new cases. In total, the country recorded 42,597 new cases and 500 new fatalities for Saturday.

Amid the virus surge, Trump is facing mounting bipartisan pressure to wear a face mask, even as his health secretary Alex Azar said the “window is closing” to control the spread.Vice-President Pence was scheduled to travel to Texas for rally on Sunday, but had postponed similar events in Tuscan, Arizona and Florida scheduled for next week.
