Nadda mediates in row, but Vij adamant

January 22, 2020 06:19 AM

BJP’s new president JP Nadda attempted to settle the tussle over control of Haryana’s criminal investigation department (CID), the intelligence wing of the state, between chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar and home minister Anil Vij, but was not successful as Vij is adamant on removal of ADGP Anil Kumar Rao, who heads the contentious department.

Nadda, in the first assignment after his elevation to the top party post, summoned Khattar and Vij to the BJP headquarters in New Delhi late on Monday night in an attempt to mediate between the two senior party leaders.

After a two-hour meeting that lasted till midnight and was also attended by BJP organizational secretary B L Santosh, both Khattar and Vij left the party headquarters for Haryana Bhawan in a car together, sending a signal that the differences had been sorted out.

Vij stays back in Delhi to make his stance clear

Khattar returned to Chandigarh on Tuesday to join a two-day training camp being organised in the assembly for first-time legislators. However, state home minister Anil Vij chose to stay back in New Delhi and made his stance clear by insisting on disciplinary action against Rao, who also heads the chief minister’s flying squad and is considered a close confidant of Manohar Lal Khattar.

“Intelligence inputs are the most crucial components of maintaining any kind of law and order situation in the state. Being the home minister, he (Rao) was supposed to brief me. However, he did not do so despite being asked. He had, in fact, disobeyed official orders. Hence, we sought action against him,” said Vij.

“Tell me, how would I prepare myself or plan in absence of intelligence inputs,” he questioned.

Vij has accused Rao of not following his directions and orders and has asked the additional chief secretary (home) to chargesheet Rao under All-India Services (Disciplinary and Appeal) Rules.

Despite the tug-of-war between the two senior BJP leaders over CID, Vij reiterated that he never had any problem with Khattar or his functioning.

“Being the CM and the head of the state, he can control any department or can review functioning of any department. But, yes till the time home department is with me, the officer was supposed to share inputs every day,” he said.

Vij had also written to Khattar urging him to replace Rao with IPS officer Shrikant Jadhav, who had earlier been indicted by the Parkash Singh Committee report and is currently posted as director of state crime record bureau at Madhuban.

The chief minister, who had to attend the meeting of the National Security Council in New Delhi, left after the assembly session on Monday to get high command’s support on the issue.

Khattar, according to sources, took up the issue with Union home minister Amit Shah and other senior functionaries of the party
