Appointments Expected Soon After Cabinet Extension

Chandigarh:

As the new Manohar Lal Khattar government has formally taken over the reins of the state, lobbying has been started for berths in the chief minister’s office (CMO) and other important posts.

There are several posts in CMO, including political advisers, media advisers, officers on special duty (OSDs) and consultants. This is in addition to the cadre posts or the government officials who are deployed with CM for the smoothing functioning of his office.

These posts in CMO are considered significant not because of the perks and benefits attached to it but the clout of being part of the state’s most powerful office. These appointments, however, are expected after extension of cabinet that may take place after November 10.

During the previous regime of Manohar Lal Khattar, several people posted in CMO as OSDs and advisers had no connection to the people of the state and were adjusted only because of their connections with either RSS or the top brass of BJP leaders. Moreover, most of them were from other states and Khattar government had to face criticism for appointing “outsiders” in CMO. Some of them even courted controversies and their issues had even reached police stations. One of them, who was from other state, had initially “offered” to serve in the CMO for Rs 1 only as token of salary when he was appointed but later started drawing full package and emerged as the most influential OSD.

Sources, however, said that considering the results in the recently concluded state assembly polls in which BJP could not get majority on its own and had to form government with the support of Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), the CM may induct some people as OSDs and advisers who are connected to the masses in the state. Sources also added that party may also consider the social engineering factor while making appointments in the CMO.

Sources also confirmed that appointments in the CMO would be interesting this time as BJP’s alliance partner JJP, in its manifesto for assembly polls, had categorically stated that only those belonging to Haryana shall be appointed in the important posts in the state.

Besides the CMO, appointment in Haryana advocate general (AG) office as law officers is also considered important for which the relatives of MLAs, senior leaders of both BJP and JJP and the kith and kin of bureaucrats and members of judiciary have started lobbying.

The state government has recently asked around 137 law officers of the state to resign for fresh appointments. As per the data, more than 30 of these 137 laws officers are from other states. As JJP is junior partner in Khattar-led coalition government, it would also demand its quota in appointment of law officers. Lawyers having affiliation to JJP have already started lobbying for appointment as law officers
