Television stars are leading yatras to woo voters for political parties ahead of the assembly election. Aadesh Bandekar, host of Marathi show Home Minister, is leading the Shiv Sena’s Mauli Yatra, while MP Dr Amol Kolhe, famous for playing Shivaji Maharaj, is a key face of the NCP’s Shiv Swarajya Yatra.

To give the Sena’s campaign a push among women, Bandekar has so far held more than 50 female-only sabhas across the state. He is trying to ensure that the party reaches out to women from all communities and regions.

Bandekar told Mirror on Saturday that so far he has covered nine assembly constituencies. Employment and job skills are the biggest concerns of the people, he said. “They want smallscale and cottage industries to come to their villages.”

Bandekar is popular among women as bhauji (brother-in-law). In Home Minister, he visits people’s homes and sets various challenges for women. Those who complete them win prizes.

On Saturday he said in the course of the yatra he had noted the concerns of women. During one meeting Bandekar phoned the Minister of PWD, Public Health and Family Welfare, Eknath Shinde, so the women could directly put questions to him. “At one place they said they wanted CCTVs outside schools so that boys don’t harass girls. We got them installed, so this was instant action.”

The NCP launched its yatra in Junnar in Pune district. The first phase covered three districts and ended at Sindkheda in Dhule. The second phase began from Tuljapur in Osmanabad and ended at Raigad.

Kolhe is famous for playing Shivaji Maharaj in Raja Shiv Chhatrapati, as well as Sambhaji Maharaj in Swarajyarakshak Sambhaji. Top NCP leaders such as Ajit Pawar and Dhananjay Munde have joined him on the yatra
