TEMPLE RAZING
Punjab, Hry told to maintain law & order on Ravidassia stir
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court on Monday directed Delhi, Haryana and Punjab governments to ensure law and order is maintained in view of protests against demolition of Ravidas temple — following the court’s order — for having been built on government land in Tughlakabad.

With reports of politicians and Dalit activists planning a mobilisation in Delhi against the demolition of the temple which was inaugurated in 1959, a bench of Justices Arun Mishra and M R Shah said no one would be permitted to give a “political angle” to its order and suggested people should desist from politicising the issue.

Attorney General K K Venugopal, who was asked by the court to assist it, told the bench that state governments should be directed to maintain law and order as people are agitating against the demolition. The court passed the order saying, “No law and order problem should be allowed to be created politically or otherwise in the states.”

Vacate temple land in 2 months: SC

The court had earlier strongly disapproved of protests for political gains and threatened to initiate contempt proceedings. It had said the court would not allow people to politicise the issue.

The Delhi Development Authority demolished the temple on orders of the apex court, which had on April 4 dismissed the appeal of Guru Ravidas Jayanti Samaroh Samiti challenging the Delhi HC verdict directing it to vacate the land and shift the temple to an adjacent area. “We are not inclined to interfere with the impugned order passed by the high court. The special leave petition is, accordingly, dismissed. However, it is ordered that the area shall be vacated within two months from today,” the court has said.

The court noted that, “Authorities also to ensure it. In case it is not vacated within the stipulated time, it will be treated as violation of the order passed by this court. Let the parties report compliance immediately after two months.
