Runaway MLA Patil has a grill session

Runaway MLA Patil has a grill session
Kagwad MLA Shrimant Patil is lodged in VVIP room No. 2, his Audi A6 is parked outside, and he is enjoying food from Punjab Grill. ‘Just vegetables,’ his Man Friday tells BM

There are many accounts in history of how leaders staged daring escapes, Shivaji’s being one of the most clever among them. The last few days of the crisis in the Karnataka government have presented many ‘escapes’ by MLAs who disappeared in broad daylight, in chartered flights. None was however as entertaining as the flight of Congress MLA from Kagwad, Shrimant Patil who escaped from a resort where Congress MLAs were staying, in all the confusion and chaos that came when Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy was leaving the resort. He escaped to Chennai and from there to Mumbai, where he has been for the last 48 hours, holed up in a hospital, ostensibly being treated for cardiac problems.

While photos of electrodes being stuck to his torso were being circulated on Thursday, along with ‘letters’ purportedly written by doctors attending on him to attest to his health condition, the Minister sent a letter to say that he could not attend the Assembly session in Bengaluru due to chest pain.

However our reporter saw that the ‘ailing MLA’ who is an in-patient at St George hospital in Mumbai and being treated for a cardiac problems, looked like he was having a party for one.

On Friday, an Audi of the MLA was seen in the hospital compound. His PA was seen carrying a vegetable food parcel from a popular Punjabi restaurant for the VIP patient. No sick bay food for the Minister even as he claims to be suffering from chest pains. Two staffers accompanying the PA were searching for plates to serve the Minister the takeaway food in, and were most disappointed with the crockery in hospital. They asked this correspondent where they could find decent plates for their boss.

Patil is said to have arrived in Mumbai, early on Thursday morning and was admitted to St George hospital which comes under the Maharashtra Medical Education Department.

Besides being a Congress MLA from Kagwad constituency in Belagavi district, Patil runs three sugar factories in Maharashtra at Karad, Bhudargad and Shahuwadi.

A team of nearly 200 policemen from Mumbai police is guarding the MLA in the hospital. Congress sources said that Patil was with the AICC general secretary Mallikarjun Kharge till Wednesday evening. The MLA is lodged in VVIP room No 2 in the nursing home. The hospital superintendent Madhukar Gaikwad did not take calls from this correspondent and Ajay Chandanwale, the Dean of the J J group of hospitals did not comment. St George hospital comes under the JJ Group of hospitals.

Doctors at the hospital said that nutritious food is provided to in-patients, but did not want to comment on the outside food being brought for the MLA.

Meanwhile, a team of Karnataka police arrived in Mumbai to meet the Shrimant Patil.

BJP sources said that they met Patil who informed them that he was unwell. Patil also informed them that he was being looked after well by the hospital management.

Cardiac cuisine?

According to Vijay Sethi, brand chef at Punjab Grill, from where a food parcel was brought for the ‘ailing MLA’, the restaurant serves a range of dishes that can be relished by patients suffering from heart conditions too. “We recommend the Salmon tikka as salmon is enriched with essential vitamins, minerals and accounts for low amounts of fat and cholesterol. Apart from this, we offer a range of ‘Good For You’ options such as Tandoori Guchchi, Quinoa Methi Tikka, Murgh Kofta, Dhaniya Mirchi Da Kukkad among others. These ‘Good for you’ options are marked as GFY in the menu and can easily be identified by patients suffering from heart conditions, etc,” he adds.

Dr Mukundan Seshadri, Head of department, Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery, Manipal Hospital Whitefield, says, on looking at the photo of Patil with electrodes stuck to his chest, that he might have had a coronary heart disease or blockage in the heart arteries. The diet for such a person should include less carbs and food of low glycemic index and high fibre, say experts. Dr Ashutosh Aspa, consultant - Preventive medicine checks, Narayana Health City, says it is better to have lots of vegetables and less non-vegetarian food when one is suffering from heart problems. White meat can be consumed that includes chicken and fish but not fried ones. Dr Ashutosh adds, “The ideal quantity should be around 100 gm of chicken twice a week. Grilled chicken is better and one should avoid gravies and stick to consuming the chicken meat instead.”

Pavithra N Raj, Chief Dietician, Columbia Asia Referral Hospital Yeshwanthpur, says methi seeds, flax seeds, wheat bran, grapes, pomegranate, oats, soybean, psyllium and fish should also be incorporated into a heart healthy diet.

Late at night, there was high drama at St George hospital when Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee working president, Yashomati Thakur, went to the room where Patil is admitted and tried to enter it. “I want to see my MLA. If he is suffering from a heart problem, why is he kept in St George’s. He should be taken to a better hospital,” she said. She also accused the doctors and police of “taking money.”
