Court convicts, fines two for littering

Chandigarh:

A local court has convicted two persons of throwing malba, garbage and waste material at public places and made them stand till the rising of the court and imposed a fine of Rs 500 on each of them.


The convicts are Surinder Kumar of Dashmesh Nagar, Nayagaon, Mohali, and Gurnam Singh of Sector 15 A.

A sanitary officer of the municipal corporation carried out an inspection and concluded the two had committed the offence. Surinder Kumar was challaned on August 4, 2016, and Gurnam Singh on August 29, 2016. They were told to appear at the medical office of health office within seven days of issuance of the challan. The accused, however, failed to appear and the complaint was filed in the court for trial.

The court convicted them

under Section 400 of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976. The court order stated, “Taking into consideration the age, character, antecedents and economic status of the convicta and the fact that the accused are not previous convicts, this court is of the opinion that lenient view would suffice to meet the ends of justice. The convicts are sentenced to undergo imprisonment till the rising of the court and to pay a fine of Rs 500.... If they fail to pay the fine, the convicts shall undergo simple imprisonment for 10 days.”
