Visitors who spend more than three hours at the Taj Mahal will now be charged an additional fee, as a circular implementing the three-hour limit has come into force.

In order to prevent unauthorised entry, turnstile gates have been introduced at the iconic monument.

“Seven turnstile gates have been installed at both the East and West entry points; five gates are for exit. There are separate gates for the entry of foreign tourists. Entry is only through a token, which is valid for three hours, exceeding which a visitor is required to recharge it at a counter near the exit gates,” said Basant Kumar, superintendent, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Earlier, visitors were allowed to stay from morning till evening — that is, from opening time (30 minutes before sunrise) to closing time (30 minutes before sunset).

Many tourists seem to be dismayed by the new rules. Mohammad Mustafa Hussain from Hyderabad said, “A person comes here for relaxation. If sightseeing is limited to three hours and charges are so steep, anyone will think twice before coming.” Visitor Sheikh Nizam said, “This will discourage tourism. The time slots should be widened.”

A woman visiting from the US, who identified herself only as Celina, pointed out that tickets are almost 10 times costlier for foreign tourists compared to Indians. “While it would be really nice to stay here for longer, timings are limited,” she said
