Industrialist Ratan Tata is likely to be the chief guest this year at the valedictory function of Tritiya Varsha Prashikshan Varg (formally known as third-year officers training camp or OTC) organised by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Currently under way in Nagpur, the OTC’s valedictory function will be held on June 17.

The RSS has a tradition of inviting eminent personalities from outside its fold as chief guests for its two most important calendar events – one is the valedictory function of OTC and the other is the Dussehra rally. Last year, RSS staged quite a coup after it managed to invite former President and lifelong Congressman Pranab Mukherjee. Apart from Mukherjee, Art of Living’s Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, former air force chief Anil Tipnis, former CBI director Joginder Singh, RPI leader and former governor of Kerala late RS Gavai have also attended RSS’s valedictory functions as chief guests.

A senior RSS functionary said, “We have sent Ratan Tata formal invitation and are waiting for his confirmation.” However, Tata Trust did not confirm the attendance till the time of going to press. If Tata accepts the invitation, it will be the third time he will publicly meet RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. Last year in August, Tata shared the dais with Bhagwat when he attended a function organised by an RSS affiliate in Mumbai. Prior to that, the two met at RSS headquarters in December 2016.

This year’s month-long camp was inaugurated at Reshimbagh on Thursday by RSS general secretary Bhaiyyaji Joshi. It is being attended by 828 RSS volunteers who have already completed the first and second year camps. The third year OTC valedictory function is the most important event in the life of RSS volunteers; those who complete the third year OTC are qualified to be pracharaks or full-timers. One such pracharak who was sent on deputation to BJP was Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
