Batala:

Sunny Deol, film actor and BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency, has landed in soup after he evoked sharp criticism for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

Referring to a photograph of Sunny, Congress leader and former MLA Ashwani Sekhri told TOI on Saturday that Sunny had hurt the religious sentiments of both Hindus and Sikhs by showing disrespect to a picture of Lord Shiva and siropa (robe of honour), which was bestowed upon him during his visit to Gurdwara Dera Baba Nanak. Congress has demanded registration of an FIR against Sunny.

In a picture, whichisbeing widely circulated on social media, Sunny is seen sitting atop the truck with his feet allegedly resting against a framed photograph of Lord Shiva and a saffron siropa (robe of honour) lying near him during his roadshow on Friday. Taking cognisance of the incident, Congress leaders of the constituency filed a police complaint against him at Batala and also staged a demonstration, burnt his effigy and demanded his immediate arrest.

However, Akalis foresee the incident as a conspiracy to divert attention during polling. SAD district president Balbir Singh alleged that the picture of Sunny Deol was morphed. He showed another photograph of Deol taken from a side where he is seen sitting as many as four feet away from the picture. “The Congress is trying to inflame communal sentiments,” he alleged.

Meanwhile, Gurdaspur SSP O S Ghumman confirmed that the police had received a complaint against Sunny Deol. “We are inquiring into the matter but the place of occurrence falls in Gurdaspur district,” he said.
