Nothing beats a dash of Bollywood glamour when it comes to drawing crowds and Congress candidate Priya Dutt knows it all too well. On Monday evening, when brother Sanjay Dutt campaigned at her sister’s constituency in Mumbai North West, her convoy was greeted with an overwhelming response. The film star had also rooted for her in 2009.

After her defeat in 2014 due to the Modi juggernaut, Priya Dutt had become inactive in politics. She agreed to contest this time only after then Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam and Congress president Rahul Gandhi persuaded her. Earlier, Sanjay had accompanied her to the Bandra collectorate when she filed her affidavit. Her followers had requested him to accompany her on the campaign trail for obvious reasons.

On Monday, the Dutts siblings’ roadshow was supposed to start at 6 pm from Santacruz bus depot, but both of them turned up late. Dressed in a white shirt, Dutt got onto a Mahindra Bolero pick up - the official campaign vehicle. There were about 20 bikers accompanying them with flags and placards. Dutt told mediapersons that he had come just for his sister. When the vehicle reached Shastrinagar, a huge crowd was waiting for him. A few garlanded him. Sakina Bi, a Dutt fan, even got a chair so that she should stand on it and garland him. The canvassers gave a rousing slogan Garibi pe var Bahattar hazar (A war against poverty with Rs 72,000) and told slum dwellers how Rahul Gandhi had promised 500 sq feet flats under the slum rehabilitation scheme.

On the campaign vehicle, former Bandra MLA Baba Siddiqui was also giving directions.

The convoy then went towards Gazdar Bandh road. Atalluah Khan, a hawker said, “We want the BJP to be defeated this time and hope for a Congress win.’’ At some places on the Gazdar Bandh road, people gave Dutt bouquets and garlanded him. The crowd had come to see him. At one place, people burst crackers to welcome the convoy.

Sushila Tripathi, a resident of Khar Danda said, “We have only come to see Sanjay Dutt, Our family is a staunch BJP supporter. We will vote for them.’’ Some local MNS leaders had also gathered to garland him.

When the level of humidity became unbearable, Dutt and Baba Siddiqui quickly got into an airconditioned SUV near Carter road. Around the same time Priya Dutt left in a different car for another meeting., As they neared Bandra station, Dutt stepped out of his SUV and took the campaign vehicle. Here lots of office-goers rushed to see him and take selfies. Some went on top of Bandra Skywalk to get a glimpse. He went to the neighbourhoods around the Bandra mosque and to the bylanes of Bandra West. A congress worker said, “The sister had helped the brother a lot when he was serving a jail sentence. Now, it’s his turn to returning the favour.’’
