BJP’s choice may take away Dushyant’s Jat edge in Hisar
Brijendra Is Chotu Ram’s Descendant

The BJP’s decision to field Union minister Birender Singh’s IAS officer son, Brijendra Singh, from Hisar has made it tough for sitting MP Dushyant Chautala to sail through this time, if he choses to contest again.

There has always been a strong ‘Jat versus non-Jat’ factor in play on this seat, also known as epicentre of state’s politics. According to data procured by political parties, Jats are teh dominant caste in Hisar. Considering Brijender’s strong political legacy, his bureaucratturned-politician son would have an edge over other candidates. Also, Brijendra may get a good number of non-Jat votes that have recently shifted to BJP because of chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar projecting himself as a ‘Punjabi leader’. In some areas, especially Hansi and Hisar, where majority votes of Punjabi community (those who migrated from Pakistan during the Partition) have shifted to BJP.

There are nine assembly seats in Hisar — Uchana, Uklana (reserved), Narnaund, Barwala, Bawani Khera, Hansi, Nalwa, Hisar and Adampur. In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Dushyant led from three Jat majority seats — Uchana, Narnaund and Uklana — by such a high margin that rival Kuldeep Bishnoi lost despite leading in six other segments.

BJP nominee Brijendra’s mother Premlata Singh is BJP MLA from Uchana. His father and Union minister was also elected as MP from Hisar in 1984 as the Congress candidate. The family had switched loyalties to BJP just before the 2014 assembly polls.

Political legacy of Birender and the family’s no-nonsense image would also be a major factor in Brijendra’s favour. Birender is grandson of illustrious pheasant leader Chotu Ram has long enjoyed support from Jat community.

Dushyant, who has risen in the state politics, remained active in the Hisar Lok Sabha seat in his five years as an MP. When he fought the election for the first time in 2014 as INLD candidate, he won despite the Modi wave largely because of Jat versus non-Jat factor. His nearest rival Bishnoi, who was supported by BJP, finished second. Kuldeep had contested on Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC), an outfit later merged with the Congress. At that time, a total of 11.55 lakh voters had polled and Dushyant got 4.94 lakh and Kuldeep around 4.62 lakh. Dushyant thus won by a margin of 31,800 votes. Congress candidate Sampat Singh had finished third with just 1.2 lakh votes. Dushyant became the country’s youngest MP at the age of 26
