Chandigarh/New Delhi:

Union steel minister Chaudhary Birender Singh Doomarkhan’s son, Brijendra Singh, an IAS officer, has been nominated as BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Hisar, a Jat-dominated constituency in Haryana. The party has also fielded former Congress leader Arvind Sharma, who recently joined BJP, from Rohtak where Deepender Hooda is the Congress candidate.

The Union minister, whose grandfather was the iconic Jat leader Sir Chotu Ram, said he has offered to resign from the Modi cabinet and from the Rajya Sabha in lieu of his son’s ticket to make a stand against dynastic politics. Interestingly, his wife Prem Lata is BJP MLA from Uchana in Haryana.

“My family has been in politics for the past 100 years and I have been in politics for the past 47 years. Since our party does not patronise dynasty or family politics, I have offered to quit. Brijendra had applied for the party ticket and since he has been picked for Hisar, I will quit active politics,” the 73-year-old said, adding that he had forwarded his resignation as a Rajya Sabha member as well as Union Cabinet minister to BJP national president Amit Shah.

The minister, who had resigned from Congress in 2014 after an association of almost four decades, said the BJP leadership would now have to take a call on his offer.

Brijendra, a Haryana cadre IAS officer of the 1998 batch, was currently posted as managing director of the Haryana State Cooperative Supply & Marketing Federation (Hafed). After his candidature was officially declared, Brijendra applied for the voluntary retirement scheme.

Brijendra told TOI that he was confident of his chances. “As an officer I have helped organise and conduct elections. Now it is my turn. With the blessings of elders and party colleagues as well as the able leadership of BJP president Amit Shah and PM Narendra Modiji, I am feeling lucky and will deliver my best,” Singh said.

Speculation about the senior bureaucrat joining politics started in December last year after he addressed a privately organised “state-level farmers’ meet” at Chaudhary Ranbir Singh University in Jind.

JJP leader Dushyant Chautala is the sitting MP from Hisar and he had defeated Kuldeep Bishnoi in 2014 by a margin of over 31,000 votes. The JJPAAP alliance and Congress are yet to announce candidates from Hisar
