To woo Jats, Veeru joins Basanti’s campaign

“Gaon walon Basanti ko agar vote nahin diya to chadh jaoonga paani ki tanki par,” said veteran actor Dharmendra as he joined the election campaign of his wife, Hema Malini, in Mathura on Sunday. Malini, who is seeking a second term from the constituency, is said to be facing anti-incumbency as farmers and local Jats are miffed with the government.

Dharmendra, who arrived here late on Saturday, addressed three public meetings in rural Mathura on Sunday and made all-out efforts to connect with the masses.

“Filmo mein main Dharmendra hoon, lekin main jiwan mein dharti putra aur kisan Chaudhary Dharmender Singh hoon, (In reel life, I’m Dharmendra, but in real life, I’m son of the soil and farmer Chaudhary Dharmendra Singh),” the 84-year-old said amidst cheers from the crowds that had gathered to hear him in the district’s Saunkh area.

“Iss Chaudhary Dharmendra nein chara kata hai, baillon ko chara khilaya hai aur khet mein khana khaya hai (This Chaudhary Dharmendra has cut and fed fodder to buffaloes and has eaten meals in the fields),” the former Bikaner MP said, appealing to the farmers not to get misled by any false propaganda.

Dharmendra, born as Dharam Singh Deol in Ludhiana in 1935, spent his early life in the district’s Sahnewal village where his father was the headmaster of the village school.

Speaking with TOI earlier at his wife’s residence, Dharmendra admitted that the anger among farmers is justified but said that they must realise that all their demands cannot be fulfilled. “We demand several things from our parents but forget to check whether they can afford it or not,” he said, while dubbing the simmering anger among Jats and the farming community “genuine”.

“Being a farmer myself, I understand their pain but want to assure them that this government did everything in its power to mitigate their suffering and will continue to do so, till they find a permanent solution,” he said, adding, “only a strong government under Modi can give a strong India”.

Asked why he came to campaign for Malini this time while he had given it a skip in 2014, Dharmendra said, “All of us need support to win.”

Praising his wife for the hard work she had done, the actor said, “The condition of the roads here is much better than the last time I came here.” He added that Hema spent lot of time in Mathura, away from him and their family, but he has no regrets, as she is impacting the lives of the people in a positive way.

“Hema wants Mathura to be the eighth wonder of the world,” he said. Commenting on how the Mathura MP was trolled for her recent pictures while working in a farm, Dharmendra said, “Even I did a lot of work in Rajasthan when I was an MP from Bikaner but only got brickbats.”

“All of us deserve a bit of praise at times,” he signed off with his quintessential smile
