Call Centre To Dial 50,000 Families A Day

If all goes as planned, the Punjab government will be calling each household in the state to know the number of unemployed members in each family.

The government is coming up with a 110-seater call center from where about 50,000 calls will be made in a day. The call centre will function six days a week from 9am to 5pm. The state government has opted for telephone as a mode to reach out to people as Punjab has the second highest teledensity in the country.

Work on setting up the call centre will began after Lok Sabha elections. The move will not only help the government to reach out to every household but also gather data on jobless youth in the state. At present, there is no authentic up-to-date data on unemployment in Punjab.

Punjab is reeling under a high rate of unemployment and creating job avenues was a major Congress poll promise in the 2017 assembly elections. In its election manifesto, the Congress had promised to get a fresh survey conducted on both the educated and the uneducated unemployed in the state.

The agency to be hired for running the call centre will make calls on all available numbers to be collected through telephone directories and other sources. Telephone numbers will also be provided by the government.

Calls will be made to create a database of job seekers and employers and each entry of job seeker and job provider in the database will be given a unique 20-digit number starting from 0000000001 prefixed by contact number.

The callers will inform job seekers of four vacancies, out of which two opening would exclusively shared with him or her only, claim government officials.

The agency will complete calling all the available numbers within a period of six months. Thereafter, the executing agency will restart the process with interactive voice response (IVR) calling. The call centre will also act as a helpline for callers.

Principal secretary D K Tiwari, who is Punjab Skill Development Mission director, said that the initiative would help in reaching out to each unemployed person in the state.

“We have worked out all the modalities. The process of setting up the centre will start soon after the model code of conduct is lifted,” said Tiwari.

He added: “It will not only help us create latest database of unemployed people but also to act as network between the job seekers and job providers by exchanging information about availability of jobs and human resource
