ABHINANDAN GOES ON 4-WEEK MEDICAL LEAVE
NEW DELHI: Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who spent two days in Pakistani captivity, has gone on a four-week medical leave following the completion of his debriefing here, two officials said on Thursday on condition of anonymity.

Specialists will assess his medical fitness over the next few months to ascertain if he can carry on with his duties as a fighter pilot, the officials said.

If found fit, he can return to flying fighter jets, they added.

The 35-year-old IAF pilot was evaluated on his physical and psychological states at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral).

According to officials, Abhinandan has hurt his spine during ejection, a common injury reported by fighter pilots who bail out. Varthaman was captured on February 27 after an air combat between the Indian and Pakistani jets.He was released two days later amid global pressure.
