Chandigarh:

Advanced Eye Centre (AEC) PGI organised a series of activities to commemorate World Glaucoma Week, from Sunday onwards. The main aim behind this is to spread awareness about glaucoma. The main highlight of the event was the glaucoma awareness walk held on Sunday from Rock Garden to Sukhna Lake to create more understanding and knowledge on glaucoma, which is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in India. A seminar focusing on disease awareness to patients and care takers, will also be held on March 14 in Advanced Eye Centre auditorium, PGI.

Glaucoma, is an entity associated with many risk factors of which the modifiable factor is increased in the eye pressure, and is characterised by damage to the optic nerve leading to irreversible blindness. Most often glaucoma causes silent vision loss as the patient will not be symptomatic till moderate to advanced stage. Early recognition and treatment is at most important to prevent progression of glaucoma. It more commonly affects people beyond the age of 40 years.

“We found that these academic activities helped early diagnosis and timely referral to higher centre at the initial stage of disease itself. This is evident from our own exponentially increasing number of patients for the last five years. We also conduct patient education programme every year in the Advanced Eye Centre. It helps patients to attain knowledge about the disease course, need for regular follow up and adherence to treatment,” said Prof S S Pandav. AEC, PGI.

The AEC has examined around 38,000 patients from April 2018 to March 2019. During the same period around 4,600 new cases of glaucoma or glaucoma suspected patients were registered. Glaucoma is a common cause of permanent visual loss.
