City hastens devp works process to beat LS polls
Issues Tenders Before Code Of Conduct Is Implemented

The impending announcement for the Lok Sabha elections has sent officials scurrying to kick-start developmental works in the city, hoping not to be outdone by the model code of conduct.

While MP Kirron Kher and other politicians are on foundation stone-laying and inauguration spree, the administration floated tenders for around a dozen of crucial works worth Rs 320 crore in January and February.

Sources said the task to look for companies or contractors to carry out the job was expedited. The tenders were to be floated in March and April. A majority of these works are technical in nature.

The engineering department of the administration will be carrying out most of the works, like the construction of the first flyover in the city, renovation works of different categories of 450 government houses, hostels of Sector-46 based colleges and Punjab Engineering College (PEC), recarpeting of roads, installation of lights on cycle tracks, construction of the first sports injury centre of the city and four new community centres and setting up of a national emergency response centre.

Sources said since the process takes time to bring or select the competent company for the works, the engineering department was eager to float the tenders at an earlier date.

“We were working day and night for the past many days to prepare tender documents of all such works. The preparation of these documents is tough owing to its technical and financial implications, adhering to norms and other related issues. Different teams of officials of the engineering department were formed to prepare the documents for the works. Now, the model code of conduct will not affect the works,” said a UT official.
