Gul Panag blunts Kejriwal’s attack on Kirron, says she’s a dutiful MP

CHANDIGARH : A day after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal’s scathing attack on Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher, Gul Panag — the party’s 2014 Lok Sabha election candidate from the city — came out in her support on Monday.

With a series of posts on her Twitter account, Panag — who has otherwise remained low profile despite once being AAP’s star campaigner — left Kejriwal further embarrassed after a poor turnout at his rally in support of the party’s 2019 election candidate, Harmohan Dhawan, on Sunday.

Calling Kher a “Mumbai actress”, Kejriwal had said she became an MP just to enhance her status as her entire focus in the past five years was to do films and earn money while the city was left ignored.

Panag in her first tweet on Monday afternoon called Kher a dutiful MP “who spends most of her time in Chandigarh”.

While advising Kejriwal, she in another tweet said that denigrating someone for their profession was not in a good taste.

‘REAL ISSUES, NOT PERSONAL ATTACKS’ “Electoral discourse needs to rise above this kind of talk. It needs to be about real issues. Not personal attacks and whataboutery,” she tweeted.

Countering Kejriwal’s claim during the rally that Kher had a poor attendance in the Parliament, Panag mentioned in her tweet that the MP had over 75% attendance.

“There have been many good parliamentarians from a plethora of professions, including the film industry,” she added.

As her tweets raised a lot of curiosity among people and many questioned the timing, she clarified that she was not planning to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “Just saying what needs to be said. Happy Monday,” she tweeted.

HT could not reach Panag for comment despite repeated calls.

AAP had to hastily declare former Miss India and actor Gul Panag its candidate in the 2014 elections after Savita Bhatti stepped down. Panag had garnered over 1 lakh votes, making it a triangular contest after a long time, though ending on behind Kher and Pawan Kumar Bansal.

NOTHING WRONG IN HIS STATEMENT: AAP While confirming that Gul Panag was very much a part of the party, AAP’s local convener Prem Garg said the party stood by what Kejriwal said during the Sunday rally. “A politician needs to fully devote himself or herself to the public cause, but Kher failed to do so,” he said.

Meanwhile, Punjab AAP chief Bhagwant Mann, who was present at the Sunday rally, too said politics was a full-time public service, “but did Kher take interest in taking up Chandigarh issues?” Mann said just attending the Parliament was not sufficient. “What matters is how many issues were raised by an MP. But Kher failed in her duty,” he said.
