Kolkata cops ‘visit’ co linked to ex-CBI interim chief Rao’s wife

The tit-for-tat between the Central Bureau of Investigation and Kolkata police seemed to continue into Friday, with a city police team visiting the offices of Angela Mercantiles Private Limited, a financial firm that has been linked in the past with CBI additional director-general M Nageswara Rao’s family.

The move came a day before Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar was scheduled to be questioned by a CBI team in Shillong.

Rao was interim CBI director when a team from the central agency landed at Kumar’s Loudon Street residence last Sunday for a “special operation”, an action that sparked a stand-off between the Centre and the West Bengal government.CM Mamata Banerjee sat on a dharna until a Supreme Court order that allowed CBI to question Kumar but barred it from arresting him.

Two police teams reached an office on Dalhousie’s Clive Row and a building at Salt Lake’s CA-39 on Friday evening.

Kolkata police issued a statement late in the night saying “Certain media reports are incorrectly reporting that Kolkata police is raiding firm linking one senior police officer. The police has conducted raid on Angela Mercantile a company owned by one Praveen Aggrawal, who has not registered his firm as per law.”

The Clive Row address is Angela Mercantiles’ registered office, according to records with the Registrar of Companies. A 12-member team of detectives and personnel reached the office around 2pm and were inside when reports last came in. No officer was willing to speak on the “operations”. Officials at the Lalbazar headquarters too were tight-lipped.
